Late last week YouTube announced YouTube Insight, a new, free tool that provides users with an account with detailed statistics about their uploaded videos. While this may be a useful tool in our ever challenging attempts to monitor the effects of posts and viral campaigns, I can’t help but wonder whether each step that helps marketers is one step closer to YouTube’s demise. It seems that as soon as a site starts getting too much attention and use from marketers it is deemed no longer cool and early adopters start to abandon. I think that in people’s desire for genuine interaction and sharing, the awareness that “marketing folk” have started stepping into the terrain is perceived as a loss of the authenticity they were seeking. It will be interesting to see if these kinds of efforts from YouTube has a negative reaction from its general audience.
