Union-Tribune sale announced in Twitter code

It’s big news for us San Diego marketing experts – our daily newspaper, the San Diego Union-Tribune, sold yesterday in an era where most are asking how daily newspapers are going to survive in the future.  Those of us in the advertising, public relations and branding agency business are constantly talking about what’s next in the marketing industry and how online tools are making traditional printed newspapers rethink their business models.  Blogs, ezines, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr — so many cool ways to receive – and participate – in news these days.

It was interesting to witness this deal with Platinum Equity go down, and I’m sure it was a roller coaster for the people inside the UT trying to make it happen.  I was fascinated to see that Vice President and Editor Karin Winner was using twitter (@kwinner), and if you read her short stream, it looks like she was talking to the one person she is following in “code” about the impending sale of the paper.  Check it:

Whatever the circumstance, I applaud Karin for exploring twitter and hope she continues to tweet updates.  It’s great to see her embrace a new form of communication — can’t wait to see what’s coming next…
