The Rise of Mobile Marketing

Recently I attended Interactive Day San Diego. The conference had numerous sessions throughout the day that focused on areas ranging from social media apps to creative design and motion media. Being one of the members of Bailey Gardiner’s online specialties group, I was especially interested in attending the email marketing best practices session and Andy Jedynek’s mobile marketing session. I have spent a lot of my time learning about email marketing and was excited to start learning more about how clients could benefit from mobile marketing.

Some interesting things I took from the session are:

* The last thing people would give up is the Internet

* People would give up food and clothes prior to giving up their mobile phone (sad, yet this applies to me)

* Mobile phones will become the number one way people access the Internet

* 1/3 of all phones will be smartphones by the end of this year

* As time goes on, the actual phone will become more important than the cell phone provider

* Targeted coupons are key. When someone is looking for a winery in Napa on their phone, they should be served a coupon for a winery in Napa.

I feel Andy Jedynek’s testing recommendations are very similar to those of email marketing. His six primary testing methods are:

1) Three online rules: speed, speed and speed

2) A good website has many front doors

3) Five second rule (after that you have lost their attention)Mobile Marketing

4) Test, measure and repeat

5) Customer referral is crucial

6) Focus on what the customer is doing on your website (on their phone) and make the experience flawless

These are all excellent testing tips. However, I feel a crucial one is missing from the primary list. What about making the experience easy? You need to make sure that users who are “not the brightest crayon in the box” can figure it out quickly.

The first thing for marketers to do right now while mobile marketing is still fairly new is to learn all the specific mobile marketing terms. This will help marketers get ahead of the game. So, start your learning!
