Is the super bowl really about the actual game?

is-the-super-bowl-really-about-the-actual-game

I’ve heard people over and over again talk about how they really just watch the super bowl for the commercials. Me, being a die hard football fan and working at a San Diego advertising agency, I would have to say it’s a 51/49 split to why I watch the super bowl (with football taking the win by 2 points).

The football game wasn’t all that exciting until the 4th quarter when the Cardinals made the great comeback. Thankfully, the commercials in the first three quarters kept me very entertained and laughing hysterically.

I agree with Heather’s post yesterday about E-Trade’s “Wings” spot being one of the best. My favorites though were CareerBuilder’s “Tips” spot and Doritos “Power of the Crunch” spot.

In an article yesterday in AdWeek by Paul Venables he writes about how the super bowl ads were “the same, tired, beaten, kicked, dragged-around-the-block-and-kicked-again cliches.” Sure, some of the ideas created by advertising agencies were  the same old thing (the Budweiser “Fetch” spot as an example) but for the most part, I think the ads were the best they’ve been in years.

Lastly, Venables states that “if we don’t start anew, the unthinkable will happen. People will tune in on Super Bowl Sunday for a football game.” I think people will tune in regardless whether they want to see the ads or the game. The only time people (San Diegans that is) will 99% watch the game for the actual game instead of the ads is when the Chargers finally make it to the Super Bowl.
